Shanice Ndlovu – 2020 Africa’s Ultimate Storyteller

On the 29th of September 2020, Shanice Ndlovu won the title of Africa’s Ultimate storyteller in spectacular fashion.

In the finals, she delivered an intricate story through a child’s eyes that toyed with the line between wonder, nostalgia, fear, and mysticism.

With her victory, Shanice has secured a consecutive win for Zimbabwe in the two years of the contest’s existence.

We asked her what storytelling means to her and she said:

“A story when told the right way, whether read or heard, becomes a mirror. This makes storytelling the place we run to when we seek reflections of ourselves and our commonalities. The place we learn that in spite of our varying natures and experiences we are not alone and are held together by something older than race, or gender, or language. This is an art form that is essential for the prevalence of human identity. The only way in which we can recognise and retain what we truly are.”

Shanice went on to publish her second book entitled The Pride of Noonlay, a collection of Africa Fiction teeming with stories of love, sacrifice, and loss.

Below is Shanice’s final story that won her the title of Africa’s Ultimate storyteller.
