Why did you enter this storytelling contest?

I have told stories for as long as I can remember; on sheaves of paper, notebooks, literary organizations, and then my blog.

Friends and family always encourage me to tell more of my stories to more people, and in fact, one of them sent me the link to this contest. They believe in me so much (I think even more than I do), and I would really love to make them proud.

In addition, I’m taking the bold step of believing more in myself and putting my work out there instead of constantly doubting.

What does storytelling mean to you?

For me, storytelling represents the preservation of life, not just because we keep memories through stories, but also because stories can bring healing; healing to souls, bonds, families, and communities. Storytelling helps broaden our minds, for it exposes us to realities apart from the only ones we know, and thereby makes us better empaths; able to understand and bear the pains of others.

It creates an atmosphere for dreams to take flight, because, in the telling of stories, minds are quickened to the possibility of living out such realities portrayed, and maybe even better ones.

Why did you tell this story?

When the event in my story happened, it was such a profound moment for me. I literally stood on the road for moments, with goosebumps on my body, thinking about what had just happened.
I shared the story weeks later at an open mic session of an art exhibition, and it was received really warmly, even more than I expected.

And so when I learned of this contest, it was easy for me to choose it because I would love for more people to hear it.

    I really love this. Very interesting. Had me hooked from start to finish. Your choice of words and it’s simplicity. Narration well delivered. I don’t think anyone would watch and not live in the story. The setting is typical, relatable and feels very real. Makes me feel like I’ve actually seen Deremi a few time. The message itself comes eventually with the mood already setting. That way it doesn’t feel like another person telling us what and what not to do when we see a Deremi, we already know from the story. The last lines sealed it all up.
    There’s so much to say😂.
    Beautiful piece Enioladunni. I want more of this perhaps we could even work together.😉

    What a nice and wonderful way to present the challenges faced by the mentally challenged amongst us and reminding us to show love and care rather than disdain. I am very impressed with the language and diction. There is a Wole Soyinka in you. John Keats, Wordsworth, John Donne, John Milton were great poets in their time. You can be greater than any of them. I am proud of you.
